On the 14th day of July 2019 at St. Michael’s Anglican Church, a legend of an impeccable and astute standing was honoured, though post-humously. A noble prince of Kalabari Kingdom, the Daa Kariboye-Dateme of blessed memory, was honoured during the women conference week 2019, in Buguma City Asalga, tagged ‘Be an Example of a Christian? Their Preacher, Prof (Mrs.) Hart, during the service, admonished women to be exemplary in their conduct and words.
The award, which is coming after 137 years of the demise of the recipient, Daa Kariboye-Dateme, was received in his behalf by the Paramount Chief of the Daa Kariboye–Dateme War Canoe House, Alabo Hon. Tamunotroko Prince Dateme, JP, Dateme VIII, for the Dateme group of houses and communities.
A lot has not been heard of this princely son of Daa Karibo, Amachree III. Daa Kariboye-Dateme, the lovely, amiable, humble and trustworthy son of His Majesty King Karibo Amachree III. K-Times gathered that he was a pleasing personality with a teachable disposition, a man imbued with a forgiving and understanding spirit; A father gave to a thoughtful, caring and kind touch; as well as a chief given to industrious acumen in early age. He was the soul and spirit of his father.
It was further gathered that Daa Kariboye-Dateme was born in 1812 at Elem Ama (Elem Kalabari or Old Shipping) to His Majesty, King Karibo Amachree III, the Amanyanabo of Kalabri Kingdom (who reigned from 1782 – 1863), son of HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY KING AMACHREE 1- the indefatigable and undisputed empire builder of Kalabari Kingdom. His mother, Madam Odikita, was the biological daughter of Chief Tubofiya Standfast Jack of Iju House and Madam Tamuno-Abere of Ngolo Family of Ke. Sadly, Queen Odikita Karibo Amachree died three (3) years after the birth of Daa Kariboye-Dateme. Though he lost his mother at a very tender age, the young Daa Kariboye-Dateme grew up to attain prominence as an astute trader in the business of his time.
In 1854, he married Ebeba Obuta – a woman of distinguished beauty, from the hands of Daa Ikpo Big Harry (then Paramount Chief and Head of Omubo
Chieftaincy War Canoe House) and in 1856, established his Chieftaincy War Canoe House right before his father – His Majesty King Karibo Amachree III. His Kalabari Iya marriage to Ebeba Obuta produced two (2) biological sons namely; Prince Owuje Dateme Karibo Amachree (1877) and Prince Kala-Ekine Dateme Karibo Amachree (1879).
Daa Kariboye-Dateme joined his ancestors in 1882. In 1884, two years after the demise of Daa Kariboye-Dateme, his elder brother – His Majesty King Kariboye-Abbi Amachree IV (who resigned from 1863 – 1900), founded Buguma.
He died in Elem Ama, but because he established his War Canoe House in Elem Ama (1856) Daa Kariboye Dateme was allocated a full polo (Compound) as required by Kalabari standard custom and tradition. Dateme Polo belongs to Daa Kariboye – Dateme – the humane son of King Karibo Amachree III.
Daa Kariboye-Dateme was born on a Sunday, hence his full name is Chief Prince Dateme Sunday Karibo Amachree. It is therefore not surprising that the FIRST AWARD EVER GIVEN TO DAA KARIBOYE-DATEME IS FROM A CHURCH (ST. MICHAEL’S (ANG) CHURCH) AND ON A SUNDAY 14TH DAY OF JULY, 2019.
The Church service witnessed the presentation of awards to various personalities for their immense support and contributions to the society and the church. Some of the recipients of the award include: Alabo Tuborimi C. Wokoma; as the conference father, Master Darego Clifford, as conference son of the year, among others.
After the service, there was refreshment at the Daa Kariboye Dateme memorial hall, Dateme Compound, Buguma; with members of the Dateme Compound who thronged in numbers to grace the event including men, women, youth, and elders.
Alabo Dawari Tam-Douglas, JP. speaking at the reception venue, called for a truce among members of the Dateme group.
He emphasized that though the incumbent Polodabo, Alabo Prince Dateme JP, is Dateme the VIII physically and Dateme II spiritually.
The occasion was fun filled with pomp and excitement, being a historical occasion for the Daa Kariboye Dateme group. Meanwhile K-Times investigation show that Alabo Hon. Tamunotroko Prince Dateme, JP, Dateme VIII, Paramount Head of Dateme Polo and communities is the secretary to the Amayanabo of Kalabari Kingdom, His Serene Majesty King Prof. T.J.T. Princewill, JP, CFR, Amachree XI.
It was gathered that Prince Dateme VIII was born on July 17, 1960. He attained the Kings College of Commerce, Buguma City, between 1972 – 1978, and proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt where he earned a B.A. Language, Second class, upper Division in 1985; and also completed his Master’s of Art (M.A.) in Linguistic Programme 1988.
