What would you tell the Kalabari people about the raving disease of COVID-19?

CORONA VIRUS also known as COVID-19 is real and deadly and at present, no known cure. It has killed hundreds of thousands around the world, many more are still dying and still, many more are being infected almost every day in Nigeria and around the world.

The times are really quite challenging and my advice to Kalabari people is to strictly observe and obey very health-hygiene instructions by washing hands with soap regularly as many times possible in a day, sanitize hands, wear face mask, limit movement, maintain social distancing, avoid handshakes, avoid crowded gathering of any kind and importantly and above all, pray to God Almighty without season, for God’s divine protection, safety, provision and wellbeing of all of us.

Following your background or bloodline as stated earlier, can you please tell the Kalabari people about succession of the Amanyanabo of Kalabari?

To the best of my knowledge and according to Kalabari custom and tradition, except the immediate family decides to hold it back, otherwise when a King or Amanyanabo of Kalabari Kingdom dies, the King Abbi Royal House will be informed through the Chairman of Council of Chiefs. Later, the King Karibo Royal House will be informed, then the Buguma Council of Chiefs and afterwards, the Kalabari Council of Chiefs (se ko-biri) will be informed accordingly and a Kalabari National Burial Committee is set up to plan the burial rites and except there are problems, the demised Amanyanabo of Kalabari is almost buried immediately and afterwards, the kingmakers, being the King Abbi Council of Chiefs, will elect one among the contestants to the stool.
The Kings are in this Order: HM, King Amachree, I Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1669 – 1757), HM, King Amakoro Tyger Amachree, II Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1757– 1782), HM, King Karibo Amachree, III Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1782 – 1863), HM, King Kariboye-Abbi Amachree, IV Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1863 – 1900), HM, King Charlie Kieni Amachree, V Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1900 – 1917), HM, King Willie Princewill Amachree, VI Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1919 – 1927), HM, King Jacob Tom Princewill Amachree, VII Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1927 – 1960), HM, King Fred Tom Princewill Amachree, VIII Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1960 – 1973), HM, King Cotton Charlie Amachree,IX Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1972 – 1975), HM, King Obaye Abbiye-Suku Amachree, X Amanyanabo of Kalabari (1977 – 1989), HM, King (Prof.) Theophilus Jacob Tom Princewill Amachree, XI Amanyanabo of Kalabari (who has been on the stool since 2002)
